Feelin' Crafty

A while ago I was searching for picture frames.  I knew I wanted to create a small gallery wall of some sort.  As I searched around, I thought it would be nice to frame some pretty botanical prints, however they're pretty expensive. Until I went here.  You can download prints for free!  Very exciting....and that motivated me to put them in these:

Yes...they were "buy one get one free"....love that! I would have purchased 4, however these 3 were the last ones standing on the shelf at Michael's and they hopped in my cart..... together - imagine that!

So, I downloaded the prints, and then used scrapbook paper that looks like papyrus - notice how it's shredded on the edges?

I thought it would appear as though the pages were torn from a book....but that's just between you and me!

I left the cardboard "newsprinty" edge.  Now I need to figure out where to hang them, and I think the wall they are leaning on would look great.

All in all, this was a lot less expensive than framed botannical prints I've seen here and here.
And because they were free,  I won't feel guilty if I decide to replace them when I change my mind.  There were prints that highlighted different colors to go with your decor....or mood!

Anyone else "getting their craftiness on"??

Update:   They're up....

I had to separate them because the light switches would not allow all 3 to hang together.  They seem to be ok with it, and for now, so am I:)

Alarm Clock

I don't know about the rest of you who have dogs, but this is Champ as we head out the door for work.  It's also what he does on the weekends AFTER he's had his walk, eaten breakfast, and played with his toys.  Citylogger and I have a theory ~  Champ thinks he's our alarm clock.  He gets us up, takes us for a walk, and  plays with us for a while.  Then, once our lunches are packed and we're ready to go, he goes back to bed....all before 7:00 am!
Whew!  If he could talk, I think he'd say...." Parents, they are so much work, but that's my job.  Get them up, encourage them to exercise, make sure they eat, and then send them on their way!"

If we could just get him to believe that it's ok to skip those first steps of the day and sleep in on the weekends.....

Yup ~ who's training who around here??

The Season That's Ahead....

Here on the farm, you never know what project Citylogger and crew have in mind.  Citylogger has been schemin' and dreamin'....I can tell...he gets that look in his eyes as he stares out the window and seems to go to a faraway place.  I wonder if he's thinking of these moments:

Shredding tree tops and logs to mulch the trails

Building the "Bridge to Nowhere"

Playing on the "Bridge to Nowhere"

Putting sod and seeding the back behind the fence

repairing holes in the driveway

Stay tuned... I'm seeing that "glazed over look again"....you never know what might be next!

Quick Fix

When we moved into our house, our builder left a beautiful plant on the kitchen counter.  She sits on the table in our breakfast nook every morning, but lately she must be feeling a little neglected.  In the middle of the plantings were annuals that have since passed:(

See how now there's a space?  And some not-so-green foliage?

I tried filling the space with holiday bows and decorative silk picks, but she was looking a little sad to me.

Well, while food shopping,  I spotted these cuties tucked away on a bottom shelf for $2.99....

The tags did not say what kind of plant they were??

Much better!

She seems herself again:)
Hope you are all having a wonderful weekend!

If You See This Guy....

Please wish him a happy 81st birthday!  Happy Birthday Poppy ~ we love you!

Relaxin' by the pond after a day of hard work:)

Thanks for walking our "Champie" when we're at work, and taking care of him at a moment's notice and telling us that he's a "good boy", even when we know he was everything but that, and for pretty much helping us with every crazy thing we ask!  May this day be one where you do whatever you want and we wish you many more:)

Ch, Ch, Ch, Changes....

As Citylogger and I went for a walk with Champ today, we noticed some subtle changes as the seasons move from winter to spring.  Some wildflowers were peeking up at us already, grass is slowly turning from brown to green, our feathered friends are back and lingering at the pond. Predictable, reliable changes that make us smile....and even anticipate after the long winter. The familiarity of these changes brings a sense of comfort.  Spring will come, followed by summer, and the anticipation of long, sunny days.

Some changes are not as welcome for us as they are for Champ.  Mud...and more mud. He loves it, and we are convinced that he lives to roll around in it.  We just get out more towels, and dog shampoo. This is a change from crunchy, cold, clean snow...fewer towels needed, less water all over the house. Still, this change makes us cringe, but laugh, as he shakes everywhere, and we shake our heads. For as certain as the seasons change, we too must adapt.

The end of tax season is a change we look forward to....less hours inside, and more hours outside for Citylogger. More time that I get to actually see Citylogger:) A much anticipated change.

And, if this were like any other school year for me, spring also brings the transition of my students from elementary to middle school. They look like deer in headlights as they anticipate this change.  But I reassure them that this is the next natural step for them.  So we tour the school, we learn how our new schedule will look, we even practice using a lock so that they can see how a combination works.  We time our transitions between subjects so we can experience what 3 minutes feels like to prepare for their next class.  They swear they will be shoved into a locker, or told their classes will be on the fourth floor (there is no fourth floor), or that detention is something akin to a prison sentence that will happen to each of them on day one!  And I tell them, they will be ok. They are ready, they have been preparing for this day, and they will take the lessons they've learned to their next adventure. They will make new friends, and keep some of their old ones too.  And when they come back to visit they will wonder what they were so worried about - besides the lunches at middle school are so much better.  Lunch is important:) And, in fact, students do come back and tell me just that.

But this year is different.  I will be moving too.  There is a temptation to give in to the unknown, the "dark side", like my students do...and to listen to the fears that linger and try to make themselves comfortable in my heart.  However, I remind myself of what I tell my students, and that I should take my own advice. And that they look to me as a role model for guidance, and reassurance that all will be ok.

So, I will pack up my room, for what will be the ninth time in my twenty year career, ( I'm getting good at this, I tell ya). I will take only what I'll need, but more importantly, I will take the memories and lessons of a place where my own kids grew up, and perhaps where I did a little growing up myself. I will tour the surroundings, and check out my new schedule. I will set up my classroom with a renewed spirit and an open mind. I will get to see former students, and work with new colleagues.  And I may even try the lunches - I hear they're pretty good:)

And so as sure as the seasons will change, so will all of us. Some changes bring us comfort, some make us uncomfortable, and some leave us wondering what will be.  But I know that one of these days in the near future, I will probably wonder what I was so worried about.

Enjoy your weekend ~

They're Baaack....

You know spring is around the corner when...

Mr. and Mrs. Mallard return to the farm! Citylogger spotted them this past weekend. Yes...they are here, and all is well.  Now if Orville and Wilbur Redenbacher would just get here, it would really be a party (they are the two geese that live in our pond).

They must be fashionably late again.....

Update:  This just in.... early Monday evening~

It's Orville and Wilbur!!  So glad to see these guys:)

What a Weekend!

I had no idea where this past weekend would take me...and maybe it's better to be surprised sometimes.  Because it's the surprises that make life interesting and fun! And honestly, if I knew all this was happening, I'm not sure I would have thought it could all be accomplished.
On Saturday, Kristen called and was painting her kitchen - did you say painting?  If there's painting to be done, I'm there!  I don't want to steal her thunder, so I will only reveal this teensy weensy shot of wall color...

Can you see it up there?  You'll have to read her blog to see more of the reveal.  I just have to say that it looks amazing and like I've said before - still glad to be asked to help!

Now Sunday was a different story....

We grabbed our passports (don't get too excited), hopped in the truck, and went to IKEA!
Dan was in the market for furniture for his new home.  There is so much eye candy in this store that I was completely overwhelmed, but excited to be there at the same time.  We only had a few hours to shop, but I must say, Dan found some great deals.  Thank goodness for Kristen and Andy because they had been there before and knew their way around.  Here are a few shots:

Isn't that light fun?!

I should have taken more pictures, but I was so distracted!

Here was the parade of carts on our way out - I should mention that this shot was taken right before they closed and we weren't sure that what we had would fit in the truck! If it wasn't going to fit in the truck, it meant returning some of it....and doing all of this before they closed....craziness I tell ya, craziness:)

I was behind them carrying a picture frame.

No worries though:

Very creative problem solving, while Kristen and I went to get food.

I had so much fun with these guys this weekend!   Now I think I will go back to work and relax:)

One For the Books...and other things!

Here is how the book cases look now:

And here's a before:

Without fabric

And after...the change is subtle...but just enough to give the shelves a little depth.

The backs are two shades darker than the walls.  It's hard to tell from these shots, as my photography skills leave a bit to be desired - perhaps that's the next project I should work on!
Hope you all had a great weekend ~ Happy Monday!

Sneak Peek

This is the color pallette we used for most of the rooms in our house.  We purchased our paint from Sherwin Williams:

Agreeable Gray is the highlighted color.  The next shade is Anew Gray which is the color of our bedroom and Tom's office.  The next shade over is called Mega Greige, and it's the color I chose for the back of the bookcases.

Here's a sneak peek:

Looks a little darker in these photos than it actually is.

I'll be continuing to work on this over the weekend, and will hopefully have better shots on Monday!

Getting Organized

This is my vanity in our new bathroom.  She's lovely and has enough room to house all my "stuff".

But while she's busy doing what vanities do, there's some "interior design" if you know what I mean, that appears to be in need of some help:
And even more:

Anyone else have a few drawers around the house in need of some assistance??
Time for a bit of an intervention:

Much better and detangled from the hair dryer!

I found these plastic organizers at Bed, Bath, and Beyond.

It's nothing earth-shattering or newsworthy, but it will make my mornings go a little smoother...so I can find what I need and not have to untangle everything.... and that's not a bad way to start a Monday:)
